COIN ANATOMY

  1. Obverse: The “heads” side of the coin, often depicting a President or notable figure.
  2. Reverse: The “tails” side, showing the coin’s denomination, often depicting a coat of arms.
  3. Legend: The principal wording or lettering on a coin, like REPUBLIK INDONESIA.
  4. Relief: Any part of the coins that is raised above the surface, including the central image, legends, and mottos. Also called device.
  5. Rim: Raised edge protecting design elements from wear.
  6. Field: Smooth area between central relief, date and legends, stars or mottos.
  7. Motto: An inscribed maxim like BHINNEKA TUNGGAL IKA.
  8. Edge: The outer border of a coin. Can either be plain, reeded, lettered or starred.
  9. Mint Mark: Small letter or symbol indicating where the coin was made.
  10. Denomination: Inscription expressing the coin’s face value, often seen on modern coins.
