COIN ANATOMY
- Obverse: The “heads” side of the coin, often depicting a President or notable figure.
- Reverse: The “tails” side, showing the coin’s denomination, often depicting a coat of arms.
- Legend: The principal wording or lettering on a coin, like REPUBLIK INDONESIA.
- Relief: Any part of the coins that is raised above the surface, including the central image, legends, and mottos. Also called device.
- Rim: Raised edge protecting design elements from wear.
- Field: Smooth area between central relief, date and legends, stars or mottos.
- Motto: An inscribed maxim like BHINNEKA TUNGGAL IKA.
- Edge: The outer border of a coin. Can either be plain, reeded, lettered or starred.
- Mint Mark: Small letter or symbol indicating where the coin was made.
- Denomination: Inscription expressing the coin’s face value, often seen on modern coins.
